I Made A Serger Cover

I needed a nice cloth cover for my serger. The serger came with one of those plastic covers but I don't like plastic on plastic.  I wanted to have something so I wouldn't have to unthread the machine or take off the overhead thread guide.  So I designed my own take on a very simple serger cover.

   The front

The back

I sewed this up in about 3 hours.  It was easy to make and I loved that I got just exactly what I needed.  Here's how I did it.  I took a rectangle of fabric about 20" x WOF and hemmed up the two long sides and one short side.  The unhemmed short side would be the back.  I cut a slit up the back for the thread guide rod to slide in.   I hemmed up the slit to the curved U part at the top and covered that portion with binding, it's not pretty, but it works.  I fit the cover on the machine and hemmed the last side so it wasn't too long.  Then I made six ties (they took the longest to make because I only cut the fabric 1 1/4" wide and they were fiddly to get folded and sewn up, but they look great because they are so thin).  The ties are a little two long, but I didn't want to take the time to make the perfect length so I left them at WOF and just cut the selvedges off.  The sides and the back are secured with the ties.  I love the cover.  It's pretty and functional.

I Love This Fabric

I mentioned that I bought a fat quarter bundle of Bake Sale by Riley Blake.  Well, I actually ordered two of them, even though I didn't know what all the fabrics looked like, I fell in love with the background colors and some of the obvious designs, like the gingham.  The other designs include flowers, mixing bowls, cake stands, recipes, cherries, and some stylized dotty fabrics. I took pictures of all the color groups and fabrics in it.  I had to share.

This fat quarter has two color designs on it.  I had never seen that before.  So fun.

More colors.

Some of these fabrics will end up as hanging dish towel toppers because, hello, kitchen scheme.  I don't know where the rest will be used but these fabrics will be used carefully and thoughtfully because I am in love with this collection.

Summer Holidays Are Upon Us

We have three lovely summer holidays coming up.  Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.  They all deserve some patriotic decorations.  I made my whole family some patriotic hanging dish towels and I have gifted them now, so I can show them off here.

I made ten of these, each family got a set of two including me.  These are so much fun to make and everyone loves them.

I bought the fabric from Hobby Lobby about two months ago and I found the pretty blue dish towels at Walmart along with the lovely buttons.  Each actual dish towel cost $2.96, and you cut the towel in half to get two hanging towels from it.  The buttons cost $1.27 for a pair and the fabric cost about $3.50 for two tops.  So a pair of hanging dish towels cost about $7.73 in materials to make and it takes me about 70 minutes to make two from the cutting out the top to sewing on the button.

White Lacey Scarf - Finished.

I finished my white lacey scarf.  I love this scarf.  It's about 6 feet long.

I'm starting a new one right now with the same size 11 knitting needles and a skein of KnitPicks Brava Worsted yarn in Denim colorway.

Fat Quarter Time

I did some fabric shopping on Etsy.  I finally found a fat quarter bundle that I couldn't live without.  I bought two fat quarter sets of Bake Sale by Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet for Riley Blake.  Those colors and prints are perfect.  I'm planning lovely napkins and hanging dish towel toppers with these fun kitchen prints.

Patriotic Kitchen Decorations

I had to make some patriotic hanging dish towels for my family.  I'm sending these off to my two brothers.  I have to make four more, two for me and two for my daughter.  I love the red, white and blue fabric and I was really lucky to find those beautiful navy blue kitchen towels to go with the fabric.  We can use these from Memorial Day until Labor Day.

Another Lacey Scarf Started

I had to take my car in for service today.  I always wait for my car when it's just an oil change and tire rotation so I needed a easy knitting project.  I decided to start a new scarf ("One Row Lace Scarf") so I could knit while I waited for my car.  To make this project I'm using white Red Heart yarn that I found in my stash and a pair of size 11 - 29" bamboo circular needles (I think they were made by Boye) which were perfect for this yarn and this pattern.  I'm loving how this scarf is knitting up.
