Scrappy String Block Door Decoration/Wall Hanging

   While making string blocks for quilt tops I decided to make a string block wall hanging and I added this to the inside of my front door.  I made eight string blocks, four for the front and four for the back.  I did put batting in the middle and I straight line quilted the sandwich.  I sewed a couple of sleeves on either side of the back of the quilt and put it on the magnetic curtain rod that I used to decorate the inside of my front door.

 

Kitties For All Seasons

   I had these blocks from the A Cat For All Seasons panel for several months.  I bought them to make some quick decorations for my front door.  I backed them with some floral fabric and sewed them up.  No batting, no quilting, no muss, no fuss.

My Favorite Wonky Christmas Tree Wall Hanging

   This was one of the first raw edge applique projects I ever did.  I hand drew the Christmas tree pattern (love the wonky branches) and cut the trees out from three different fabrics.  Each tree has a bunch of little colored beads on it.  I wanted sequins but could not find any so I settled for beads.  I made this originally to hang on my front door for the Christmas season.  It has been replaced on the front door with a cardinal decoration and the trees now hang on the inside of the door.

Fall Sunflower Door Decoration

    I finally finished a sunflower door decoration for use during the fall season.  The flower is made from 100% felt.  I made a petal pattern in 3 sizes for the petals and the center was cut freehand from a 6 inch circle.  I sewed the flower to cotton backing material.  I made the center with points which is different from the normal plain circle.  I also added some dark purple seeds in the center for texture and color.  I was thinking of the Van Gogh sunflowers when I decided on the blue background.

    I enjoyed making this project.  The felt was really easy to sew.  I did a straight stitch around all the edges of the petals.  I used a few pins when I placed the petals and I was really surprised that I didn't have any problem with the felt shifting during sewing.

New Project - Sunflower Door Decoration

  Yesterday I spent some time cutting up 100% wool felt sheets that I purchased several months ago for a sunflower door decoration I want to make for the fall season.  I purchased my wool felt from an etsy seller.  I used a petal pattern that I drew.  Petals are one of the things I can draw along with Christmas trees and holly leaves.  I used three different sizes of petals and two different colors of felt for the petals.  I'm waiting for my background fabric that I ordered a few days ago.  I should have that next week and then I can get the sewing part started.  Here is a little peek at what I did yesterday.

I Can Trace.

      I have had the muslin for this project for a couple of weeks and I've had the pattern even longer, but I couldn't make myself start this project because I was afraid I was going to screw up the pattern tracing.  I've never traced a pattern before, I can't draw, and I don't own a light box.  I do have a lovely sliding glass door in my dining room that gets beautiful morning light and I knew I could use this as a light box, but I was procrastinating.

   This morning I made myself get my fabric ironed, I opened my new brown pigma pen, got my painters tape out, pulled out the embroidery pattern and the instructions.  I used the painters tape to secure the pattern and the fabric to the window.  There were three pattern pages.  I taped the first page up, and didn't tape up the second page until I finished tracing the first, then I lined up the second pattern page with the bottom of the first page, taped it to the window and traced it.  The third page was the easiest.

   The morning light at 10:30 a.m. was perfect.  It took me about an hour to trace this pattern and it came out really well.  I've already selected the colors from my embroidery floss stash and I'm ready to start stitching.

Patriotic Door Decoration Finish

I finished my red, white, and blue star.  I love it.  It will be perfect for a summer front door decoration.

Tonight I will be piecing squares for my new potholders.  I need new potholders to go with the curtains I made earlier in the summer.

Tomorrow night I will start washing the fabrics for my rosey irish chain quilt I am making for myself.  I picked a variety of Tanya Whelan rose fabrics in pink and green with a pretty white on white rose pattern fabric for the background.  I can't wait to get started.
